REVIEW : Brainstorm --- Midnight Ghost (AFM Records, 2018)

I really liked the new BRAINSTORM album a lot!!!!! To be honest with you here, I played this new record over and over again the last three days! It's one of these releases that sticks into your mind for days; melodic power metal at its best!! But, lets take things from the start. Brainstorm is a band that knows how to deliver solid and powerful power metal stuff with plenty of melodies, that's a fact.

Since its creation back in 1989, Brainstorm released great records and achieved to build a strong fan base. I'm a kinda new fan of Brainstorm's music. I 'follow' the band from its monster release back in 2005, "Liquid Monster", and I loved its latest couple efforts (Firesoul and Scary Creatures).

In this new opus, "Midnight Ghost", Brainstorm continues to deliver its same powerful style with tons of melodies, heavy to the bone guitars, a bit darker in places and, of course, the well-known in-your-face performances that will please each and every single fan of the melodic power metal scene.

The new album is not a concept one. There’s a thematic thread: the fear of ghosts, monsters under your bed, the bogeyman in your wardrobe, wild beasts in the night … in other words: fears that many of us have had since childhood. In line with hits, on ‘Jeanne Boulet 1764‘, Franck sings about strange events that took place in Gévaudan in southern France 250 years ago when around 100 children, adolescents and women were killed by a wild animal.

"Midnight Ghost" kicks-off with a killer song; "Devil's Eye" is a pedal to the metal track that must be listen to maximum volume! This is heavy metal ladies and gents! "Revealing The Darkness" is again a heavy tune with a darker vibe in it but with a killer chorus line. With "The Pyre" Brainstorm returns to their well-known ass-kickin', powerful and extremely melodic metal paths while in "Divine Inner Ghost" the band delivers its heaviest moment so far. In "When Pain Becomes Real" we have yet another highlight out of the new opus. Heavy, melodic and in some parts acoustic "When Pain Becomes Real" is one of the most interesting moments here. Especially the acoustic parts gives an extra flavor to the final result. The track that closes "Midnight Ghost" is called "The Path". This is the one and only ballad of the album and man this is really huge!!! Great arrangements, passion, harmonic lines to die for and an overall epic sound that makes this song my personal favorite.

Brainstorm's "Midnight Ghost" is one of the best, if not the best, melodic power metal albums of 2018, no doubt bout that! This is ladies and gents a great record all the way! Classic and traditional melodic power metal stuff at its best! For the die-hards of Brainstorm "Midnight Ghost" will be available on CD, CD/DVD digibook (incl. bonus-DVD Scary Creatures Over Europe 2016, recorded at the LKA Stuttgart), blue vinyl, yellow/blue splatter vinyl and limited-edition box set. So the same motto applies as to the album’s musical substance: Everything you could wish for!

Rating : 9,5/10
