REVIEW : False Coda / Secrets and Sins (2016)

False Coda is a Greek progressive metal band that was formed back in 2011 in Athens. After a few line-up changes, the band released its debut record with the title "Close To The Edge". This album gained positive feedback from both fans and press and the 'reward' was a live performance with Evergrey as a support band.

Nowadays, these Greeks are back with album number two with the title "Secrets And Sins". The new effort sees Stefanos Zafeiropoulos taking over the lead vocals. The mixing and mastering was handled by Lambros Kritsimas at SoundGarden Studios (Athens, GR) and the artwork was created by French artist Nihil (Leprous... etc.). There is, also, a guest appearance from Jeff Loomis (Arch Enemy, ex-Nevermore) in the song "Monolith".

As I mentioned above, the band plays progressive metal and it includes strong melodies, some extremely interesting and very technical guitar parts, solid arrangements and, overall, it offers a powerful record that will be appreciated by any fan of this scene.

The first big moment comes with the opener tune of "Throne Of Blood" that sounds just like the perfect sample of False Coda's music. And that is powerful, technical, melodic, atmospheric and progressive as it gets!!!! The same goes with "Moral Compass" and "New Paradigm". All three are superb slices of pure prog metal stuff with strong arrangements that are filled with great and fresh ideas. "Flickering Lights" that features some 'brutal' vocals in it is too 'difficult' for my music tastes while "Monolith" that includes a solo by Jeff Loomis is one of the album's best tunes.

Closing my review, I would say that "Secrets And Sins" is a strong album that has its moments. This album has potentials and that's a thing that can be heard in every single moment here. The only low point for me here is that some 'brutal'-aggressive vocal parts ruin some of the songs. Other than that, this is another very good and technical prog metal album with some killer tracks in it. Recommended!!!

Rating : 7,5/10
