REVIEW : SINNER, Santa Muerte (AFM Records, 2019)

Mat Sinner and his gang are back in business with their brand new opus entitled "Santa Muerte". With already many albums on their sleeve Sinner is considered as a classic hard rock/melodic metal act in this scene. Mat Sinner is a hard working man, very talented and that can be proved by his abilities to write songs that stand through the test of time.

"Santa Muerte"  features a permanent second voice, alongside lead shouter Mat Sinner, for the first time. This voice is female and hails from Venice. Her name is  Giorgia Colleluori and she is the lead singer of Eternal Idol. Mat: “I’d first noticed Georgia in her own band, Eternal Idol, that’s why we enlisted her as a background vocalist for ‘Rock meets Classic’. Except Giorgia "Santa Muerte" features two of the most charismatic singers of the international rock scene: Ricky Warwick (The Almighty, Thin Lizzy, Black Star Riders) and Ronnie Romero (Ritchie Blackmore´s Rainbow).

The sound here is pure classic hard rock with many melodic metal pinches as well. All the songs here are well-written and feature some impressive guitar lines, passionate performances and memorable hooks and choruses.

The first highlight comes here with the opener tune of "Shine On". An edgy and punchier rock track that puts you at once to the album's mood. "Fiesta Y Copas" sounds like it jumped out from Thin Lizzy's earlier works while in "Last Exit Hell" we have a fast-paced and more metallic song that shows Giorgia's amazing vocal abilities. The rockier and, again, Thin Lizzy-esque "What Went Wrong" is just killer while in "Death Letter" we are dealing with yet another very interesting tune here. A bluesier, mo"The Wolf", "The Ballad Of Jack" and the straight forward "Stormy Night" are all three strong samples of Sinner music.

In my humble opinion, "Santa Muerte" is one of the band's best releases so far. It's up-tempo, powerful, heavier and includes some killer tracks in it. A big bravo to Mat Sinner and his gang for releasing such an impressive record. If you love bands such as The Almighty, Thin Lizzy, Jorn or even Black Star Riders, then "Santa Muerte" is a must add to your collection.
