Interview with FIRENOTE's vocalist Ricky Tournee!

Firenote is a melodic hard rock band from Finland with an attitude as big as a stadium. The band was formed in 2004 by Hammond and Ricky. The idea was to put together a band which would play hi-octane stadium rock in the good old 80's way, sounding larger than life. At the beginning of 2008 IVK Music was interested in signing Firenote. A record deal was signed in the summer 2008. Their debut album "FIRENOTE" was released in 2009 and received some great reviews in all over the net!
Below you can some very interesting things that Firenote's vocalist, Ricky Tournee, said to Heavy Paradise about their successful debut album, their follow up album and Eurovision!!
Enjoy!
- Hello Ricky! I would like to welcome you here in Heavy Paradise!

Hello Vassilis! Thank you for this opportunity to be interviewed.

- Firstly, I 'd like to ask you what's new in the FIRENOTE's camp?

Well, there's actually many things going on. Biggest things that's happening as we speak is that we are changing the line-up. Finnish fans already know this since we already published a statement in finnish on our website, but for you guys this must be a kind of suprise. In general we had some personal issues inside the band since the debut album was released and it finally led into situation where we just couldn't continue with the same line-up. Currently we are interviewing new band members with out gitarist Isko and so far I can tell you it's looking very promising.
We're gonna have new drummer and bass player soon and will make announcement about it later.
We have also spent a lot of time writing new material for the next album with Isko and it's also going on very well. But yeah.. that's what has happened in past six months or so and we're really happy to finally get things sorted out and start touring again.

- Can you tell me some things about the creation of the band?

Firenote was originally formed by me and Hammond (ex keyboard player). We met eachothers somewhere back in 2005 and agreed that world is missing a good 80's styled hard rock band.
After couple of beers we decided to do something about it and soon after that we had our group together. Original line-up was: Ricky (vocals), Hammond (keyboards), Isko (guitar), Johnny (drums), Gene (bass). With that line-up we did lots of gigs, but unfortunately we were forced to change the drummer. So Mike jumped to the crew right before we started to record the debut album.

- Last year, you have released your very good debut album! For me it was a fine example of European melodic hard rock album. All over the net you have received some very good reviews. I guess that you must be very happy from the result of your debut?

I'm very happy with the result! Album turned out to be exactly what we all had in our minds. Producer Erkka Korhonen was really the right path to go with. There's really nothing I'd like to change or do differently on that album.

- I really liked the front cover of your album :-) . Who was responsible for that?

Cover art was by very very talented finnish artist called "Toxic Angel". He has done some great artwork for many finnish heavy / hard rock bands. He was very inspired when I called him and told we want a hot brunette with motorbike.
 - You have a contract with a not so known record label. How difficult is nowadays, for a melodic hard rockin' band, to get a good record contract? Are you satisfied with the promotion of your debut album?

I would say it's very difficult to get the contract nowadays since there's so many bands out there. Luckily we finally found good company who was as exited about our music as we are. Ofcourse as a band member you always wish for more promotion, but I really think there's nothing to complain about.

- Would you participate in a song contest, like Eurovision, to 'spread the word' about Firenote? How do you see the fact that during the last year's bands such as WIG WAM, LORDI and THE POODLES took part in a contest like Eurovision?

I think it's cool that hard rock and metal has taken part in contests like Eurovision! Finally I can actually watch those shows since there's at least one or two GOOD bands among the other sh*t   ;-)
I think it's not impossible to think that Firenote will also try to participate at some point in future.

- Finland is well known for heavier/darker bands. How is the situation in Finland the melodic hard rock scene?

It's getting better. We have now Brother Firetribe and Recless Love who are also spreading the word of melodic hard rock with us.

 - If you had to choose three songs from your debut album, which will that be and why?

This one is difficult... let me think.. I think I'm gonna pick "She Stole My Speedos" for sure. It's just a great power-metallish song that I personally like very much. It also has the comedy aspect that I also like.
My second choise would be the ballad "My Love Will Never Die". I can't tell why, but for some reason I enjoy doing ballads.
And finally I will choose the first single track from the debut album "Danger". It has very cool guitars by Isko and the song is very near to my personal taste of music among the Speedos song.

- During the last years, FIRENOTE has performed in many live gigs. How is the reaction of the fans? Have you performed live outside Finland?

We have been lucky to be able to play to the crowd that has been very supportive. Even at the very beginning when we started the band and played in small (very small) venues, there was always majority of the audience liking what we do. I think it's the energy that we spread on the stage that does the magic... and ofcrouse the good music ;-)
So far we haven't done tours outside Finland, but I'm sure it's about to change soon.

- What are your influences?

My personal? Well... mostly I've listened great singers like "Michael Kiske", "Timo Kotipelto", "Jorn Lande", "Marco Hietala" and so on. Can't really recall all great performers and put them into some sort of order ;-)
- What's FIRENOTE'S future plans?

Right now we're planning to get second album started with new line-up. That's the main goal we have right now.

- Any messages to your fans?

Stay tuned! More is coming and Firenote is burning higher than before!

- Thanx a lot Ricky for that interview. All the best for the future.

Thank you too and all the best for you aswell. Rock the blues,

Ricky
