REVIEW : WHYZDOM / Symphony For A Hopeless God (2015)

This is the third album for the French Symphonic metal band of Whyzdom. "BLIND?" in 2012 was a really very interesting album that included some excellent tracks in it combined with powerful performances, solid guitar work and very good arrangements.

Nowadays,"Symphony For A Hopeless God" comes as the natural next step for the band and, of course, a step higher regarding of "Blind?", musically speaking. "Symphony For A Hopeless God" depicts the constant need of humans to rely on the irrational to guide their life, and to give up their own freedom of thought, speech and action on behalf of what we know as “religion”. Slaughters, genocides, ethnic cleansings, have too often been committed in the name of religion. What would God think of that if he really existed? This is exactly what this album is all about.

'Symphony For A Hopeless God' was produced by Vynce Leff, recorded, mixed and mastered in Paris at Powermania Studio, assisted by Mathieu Gillon (120dB Studio).

From the opening tune of "While The Witches Burn", WHYZDOM makes clear that with this new album they are ready for some bigger things. A more theatrical vibe, bigger symphonic parts, tighter arrangements plus an excellent female voice (reminds me of Tarja) and there you have a great start. "Let's Play With Fire" is a more straight forward power metal track but with an intense and catchy chorus and a great guitar solo. "The Mask" is one of the album's highlights!! It includes a superb melody, a huge guitar work and superb vocals (once again). Check out also "Theory Of Life" and "Pandora's Tears".

"Symphony For A Hopeless God" comes to prove that WHYZDOM has to offer a lot to this particular scene. A highly recommend release for all the NIGHTWISH fans but, also, for each and every fan of the female fronted Symphonic Power Metal sound.
