INTERVIEW WITH DAVID ROMEU OF ANKOR

Ankor was formed in May, 2003, when some fourteen-year-old friends decided to get together to enjoy, create and let their imagination run wild with music. After performing a lot of concerts and publishing several demos in Spain, their first album ‘Al Fin Descansar’ (sung in Spanish), was released by the Spanish label ‘Santo Grial Producciones’, in January 2008. ... The band received wide acceptation by the public, as well as good reviews by the press specialized in rock music, especially considering that the average age of the members was only 19. The band's next step was "My Own Angel" and it's about a very good melodic metal effort full of  great songwriting, brilliant melodies and powerfull performances. I had the pleasure to talk with ANKOR's mastermind David Romeu about the band's past, present and future plans! Enjoy!

Heavy Paradise : Hello Dave and welcome here for this interview! Firstly, I would like to congratulate you for the album "My Own Angel". This album was among my favourite 20 albums for 2011!!!

David : Yeah, great!! Thank you so much for your interest!

Heavy Paradise : So Dave, can you tell our readers a few words about Ankor?

David : We have been friends since we were about ten years old. We have always liked rock music and in 2003 we formed the band to enjoy the music we love. In the next years we recorded some demos until we made our first album “Al Fin Descansar” (sung in Spanish). Now, we are presenting our second album, first in English, My Own Angel

Heavy Paradise : Are you satisfied with final result of "My Own Angel"?

David : Yes, we directed the entire production, as we did with the previous album. We knew what we wanted all the time, if you produce your own album, you can decide all the details, the sounds and the arrangements, and the final work is just as you have wanted. The negative part is that maybe your ideas are not better than a professional producer, but if you are sure of your possibilities and you have well-structured your ideas, you have to try it.

Heavy Paradise : Your debut album was sang in your mother language. This one is in English. Do you think that this is the big step to make the Ankor name more recognisable in a wider audience?

David : We chose English because we think it fits this style of music better, but yes, we also hope to spread our music over the world, and that would be more difficult in Spanish.

Heavy Paradise : In "My Own Angel" I hear a lot of Evanescence influences. The fact , also, that you achieved to marry the 80'sHeavy scene with a modern twist, it is, also, another interesting thing. Which are your mainly influences as a band but, also, personally? How could you describe the sound of Ankor?

David : We like all good music in general, no matter if it is Pop, Funk or Jazz, but we have some rock and metal bands that we really like, for example, Avenged Sevenfold, Killswitch Engage, Bullet for my Valentine, Within Temptation, Nightwish, A Day to Remember, Paramore…Our songs are direct, looking for the best first impression for the public. Our music is very energetic and melodic, and we want to transmit it through all our instruments,

Heavy Paradise : I saw that you are responsable for the songwriting but, also, for the music. When you are writing a song, are you using your personal experiences or are you writing for various themes?

David : We have written the lyrics expressing our feelings, our imagination, and sometimes, real events. Normally the people think that in the Metal Music we talk about dark or sad things, but our songs are written to find the positive side of all. We are very positive people!

Heavy Paradise : I read in your Facebook page that your are writing new songs. That's really great news!! Can you tell us some more info about that?

David : Yes, we are composing our next album and we already have finished the first single, maybe we will publish it in a few months!

Heavy Paradise : How difficult is for a Spanish band to make a big name outside its country? How is the situation with this kinda of scene in your country?

David : It’s really difficult… In Spain there aren't many opportunities for the metal bands, but we are trying to achieve it, playing in all the places we can.

Heavy Paradise : Which is your favourite track From the "My Own Angel"?

David : Bff… The most difficult question! It’s impossible to choose just one... We love each for its meaning, we really like our album, hehe

Heavy Paradise : Are there any plans for live performances?

David : We are planning some shows here in Spain and after that in Europe. One of our following goals is be able to go to America and Japan.

Heavy Paradise : So, David, is there something else that you want to share with our readers?

David : Thanks for your attention, we hope you like the album, see you soon for sure!

Heavy Paradise : At this point, I have to thank you for this interview and wish all the best for the future!

David : Thanks guys, it’s a pleasure, greetings from Spain!!
