ELDRITCH / Gaia's Legacy (2011)

Veteran progressive metallers Eldritch are back with their eighth studio album ‘Gaia’s Legacy’, a concept on global warming based on Al Gore’s documentary ‘An Inconvenient Truth’. The band returns to their technical progressive roots, with lots of influences raging from thrash to melodic rock with a 'modern' touch but still in the band's style.

Vocalist Terence Holler wrote all the lyrics here and the album was produced by Marco Ribecai & Eugenio Simone in Italy. Firewind’s Bob Katsionis, a long-time fan of the band, is credited as a special guest keyboardist on the song ‘Like A Child’. The fact is that I was never an ELDTRICH fan. From what I'm hearing, the band's sound is somewhere between SYMPHONY X's and THRESHOLD, without loosing their indentity, and their strongest point, imho, is their vocalist. This guy has a very good voice and he achieves to perform well from heavier tracks to some mellower stuff.

"Deviation", the opening track, features some really cool guitar lines, it's melodic and it shows the band's music skills. "Our Land" has a huge guitar work while "Everything's Burning" is, probably, the heaviest song in this effort! It's aggressive without loosing it's melody, in the chorus line, and there are some thrashier elements as well. "Like A Child" is another highlight here and it features Firewind's keyboardist Bob Katsionis as a guest.

Overall, this is an extremely interesting release. I can say that I really enjoyed every single moment of this album even if I'm not a big fan of this gerne. I think for the fans of ELDRITCH this is a must have, for the others this is an interesting suggestion of a band that combines soaring melodies and powerfull sound. Check it out!
