So, what we have here is the brand new album from melodic metal masters FIREWIND. For those who don't know Firewind, allow me to say that this band has an already long time career and it's held by guitarist Gus G (Ozzy, solo). With many great releases so far, Firewind achieved to build a strong reputation around their name and played in many great shows and, also, shared the stage with many big bands.
The new opus is simply entitled FIREWIND and it's going to be released through AFM Records on May. "Firewind" also features a couple of changes in the band's camp. Firstly, Bob Katsionis (Outloud, solo, e.t.c.) is out and, secondly, we have the addition of Herbie Langhans (vocals).
Gus G and Herbie Langhans got to know each other back in the autumn of 2019, when the Firewind leader was looking for a suitable replacement for Henning Basse after the tour with Queensrÿche. “I remembered Herbie singing for Sinbreed and how amazed I always was by his vocal performance”.
For those who are familiar with Firewind's sound, let me tell you that this new self-titled opus will kick your ass, that's sure. It's powerful, heavy, technical with some killer and inspired guitars by Gus and the new shouter fits perfectly with Firewind.
The first couple of tunes, "Welcome To The Empire" and "Devour", are perfect samples of classic Firewind. Both tracks are 100% Firewind at its best and introduced us Mr. Herbie Langhans's powerful vocal range. In "Break Away", we have, inmho, the best track so far. Straight forward melodic metal gem that includes a killer chorus line and, of course, Gus G's sharp guitars in front row. The first ballad of the album comes with the amazing and very emotional tune of "Longing To Know You". This is one of the new opus's highlights, no doubt about that!! Next, we have the fast-paced and more hard rocking track of "Perfect Strangers". Man, this is yet another killer track that I enjoyed a lot; to be honest, this one is THE song of the new album!!! Check out, also, the ultra melodic and catchier "All My Life" and "Space Cowboy" and the sure thing is that both tracks will thrill you!!!
For me, Firewind with their brand new self-titled release strikes back stronger than ever! There's a perfect balance between melodic hard rock and melodic metal with the neccesery melody in it and the final result is killer! Herbie Langhans's soaring and powerful vocals along with Gius G's inspired guitars makes the perfect combination for your melodic power metal/hard rock album of the year! Highly recommended!
