Metallica / Load (1996)

1996 and Metallica, after the huge and successful 'Black Album', is back with their new effort which is titled 'Load'. And if with 'Black Album' confused their fans, with 'Load' they lost a lot of their old 'die hards' but they earned a lot of new ones. With a totaly new image, new haircuts and a 70's hard rock style Metallica released 'Load'. Ok, this is a big turn to Metallica's heavy (thrash) sound but the final result, at least for me, is overall very good. The sound here is more hard rock, somewhere between 70's and 80's, with some laid- back classic rock elements but also some, here and there, Alice In Chains sound as well. The up-tempo heavy tracks such as the huge "Ain't My Bitch" and "The House Jack Built" are here. Also some mid-tempos like the very good ballad "Mama Said" and the 'darker' Until It Sleeps" are some excellent examples of Metallica's new 'age'. Bottom line is that this is a very good hard n' heavy album, more mature sound, but overall a strong one. Well done.
