It was reported that several months ago, critically acclaimed singer/songwriter Joe Grushecky was seeking aid from fans to help fund the creation of his next studio album. The fans have done their part and so has Grushecky, as his 17^th solo effort overall, 'Somewhere East of Eden,' is set for release on October 8th, via Schoolhouse Records and distributed by Warner Bros Records Nashville. The album was recorded just across the Pennsylvania state line in Weirton, West Virginia (Grushecky is based in Pittsburgh) at long time co-producer Rick Witkowski’s Studio L.
Immediately, it becomes clear that Grushecky can still offer up inspired and instantly memorable rock n' roll, as evidenced by such 'Somewhere East of Eden' standout as the blues rockers "I Can Hear the Devil Knocking" (a song which WDVE FM in Pittsburgh is going to officially add) and "John the Revelator," as well as the classic soul sounds of "Save the Last Dance for Me." And lyrically, Grushecky doesn't disappoint either, as the album’s thought-provoking title track is about an Iraq war veteran and the problems he faces in returning home and trying to keep the “monkey on his back” from dragging him down.
As Grushecky explains, "In 2011 I found myself with the luxury of a large collection of songs I had written, both old and new. At the same time, I embarked on a solo acoustic project recording old R&B and blues songs that had inspired me through the years. My producer, Rick Witkowski, and I began recording with the goal of releasing a new record when I figured out exactly what I was trying to do. The process of creating and recording got the writing process going again. I began to focus on telling a story. I wanted to write about my life right now, about a man who is getting older and lives and works in a community where people struggle daily and nothing is ever guaranteed. I wanted to write about the kids who are often neglected and the veterans who are often forgotten. I wanted to write about my life as a teacher and about the future that we are handing to our children. And I wanted to write about going out on a Friday night, plugging in a guitar, and turning it up to ten! I feel it in my bones. 'Somewhere East of Eden' is one of my very best."
For decades, Joe Grushecky has been supplying fans of true rock n' roll with countless gems - issuing albums as a member of the Iron City Houserockers and as a solo act, and also working with Bruce Springsteen (the latter of whom produced Grushecky's 1995 effort, 'American Babylon,' co-wrote a pair of tunes and played on the album, and even did a stint as a surprise touring guitarist with the band).
And besides his songwriting and performing talents, Grushecky serves as a performer and executive board member of the Light of Day Foundation - having helped raise over one million dollars worldwide to combat Parkinson’s Disease at the 40+ Annual Light of Day Concerts in the United States, Europe, and Canada.
Soon, fans will receive another fine set of tunes from the great Joe Grushecky, with 'Somewhere East of Eden.'
